Free public transport advocates protest in Katowice

Radio Katowice: Organizers of the happening that took place on the square in Katowice demanded free public communication The initiative was organized on the occasion of the International Day of Free Public Transport.

Patryk Kosela, spokesman of Free Trade Union "August 80", which was one of the organisers of the action, said that free public transit is not a burden on the budgets of municipalities. He added that there will no need of repairs the roads as well as construction of new parking lots, if the majority of drivers will change to buses and trams.

According to Witold Klepacz (MP from Your Movement party), who joined the campaign for free public transport, it can be introduced gradually.

Participants of the demo submitted a petition to the president of Katowice Piotr Uszok and board members of KZK GOP (which is the transport organizer in 27 cities and municipalities in the Silesia region).

Free public transport for deaf people in Bydgoszcz

Enjoy Bydgoszcz: The City Council of Bydgoszcz voted on Wednesday on a draft resolution granting deaf people over 21 years old rights to free use of public transport. The idea was supported by councilors.

Councillor Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz (City for Generations) wanted to restore the free communication for blood donors. However he didn`t indicate the financial impact of the proposal on the city budget and therefore the city council lawyer concluded that the introduction of such a proposal to a vote would be illegal.

Next city in Poland with free public transit?

Radio Kielce: Residents of Sandomierz can soon have free public transport. It` a idea of councilor Maciej Skorupa from the club "I love Sandomierz". In an interview with Radio Kielce he assured that this is not a pre-election populism, but a kind of bonus for all those paying taxes in Sandomierz. He added that more and more cities use such solutions.

Demonstration in Katowice

"Gazeta Wyborcza Katowice": Trade unionists and activists from leftist organizations organise a a demonstration in front of the City Hall in Katowice on Friday. They will be demanding free public transport.

The campaign was organized jointly by the politicians of Your Movement, Polish Labour Party and Free Trade Union "August 80". They will be joined by councilors from Katowice, Siemianowice Śląskie, Piekary Śląskie and Będzin.

They all want to see free public transport in the cities of the region. Proponents of this solution will meet at the city square and then go to the City Hall. They want to give a petition to the president of Katowice Piotr Uszok. - Free communication is the most sensible way of organising transport in the city. It's getting rid of traffic jams, the investment for the future and relief for our wallets - say the organizers.
